Read: Psalm 33:12-22 and Hebrews 13:7
Psalm 33:20, “Our soul waiteth for the LORD; he is our help and our shield.”
In this verse the meaning of the word waiteth in Hebrew means ‘to adhere to’ … a good English word which means to stick to, like glue. In Colossians (3:l4) Paul tells us that love is the bond of perfection. The word ‘bond’ means glue!
If we think of this verse in Psalms as, “Our soul waiteth (sticks with the glue of love) to the LORD,” we see the connection.
If you are hiding behind a shield, you don’t hold it far away from your body or lay it aside and fight without it. You keep very close to that shield, using it to protect your vital areas. So it is here. The LORD cannot be our shield if we are not protected within its scope. That scope for the believer is love and fellowship with God.
When my grandson Timmy was three years old, he had a very close relationship with his Daddy. There were times when Daddy must be away from home on business for several days at a time. During those times Timmy was miserable, cranky, touchy, demanding constant attention from those around him. He missed his Dad, his hero, his protector and friend. After one trip away from home for my son, I chanced to ask my daughter-in-law if Timmy was back to himself now that his Daddy was back home. She replied, “You couldn’t get a piece of paper between them.” That is how we must stick to our Father. The difference here is that the distance between us and God is created by our movement, not by His.
In Christ we are surrounded by protection … Salvation is our shield. (Psa. 18:35) Truth is our shield. (Psalm 91:4) Faith is our shield. (Eph. 6:16)
FORCE FIELD
There is a hedge about my life,
A bulwark sure and strong,
That keeps me safe in time of strife
When evils ’round me throng.
Not only does this power hold
My life encircled there,
But its sure strength helps me be bold
And untried ventures dare.
Whate’er I do, where’er I go,
Safe ways or paths untrod,
Surrounding pow’r is mine, I know,
For my force-field is God.
Prayer: Dear Lord, help me to stick to You with the glue of love so that Your shield is always around me.
