November 14th

Read: Psalm 139:11-12; 1 Cor. 4:5; 1 Pet. 2:9-10; John 1:1-5

I had trouble when I was in science class, trouble understanding that extreme cold was the total absence of heat. Somehow, to my young mind, cold was the norm and heat abnormal. Perhaps that had to do with the cold climate in which I was raised. I finally believed my science teacher and began to understand more about opposites, especially in the natural world.

Because I struggled in Mr. Ward’s science class, I have a better understanding of one of God’s principles: darkness is the complete absence of light. If there is a light anywhere in sight, one is not in total darkness. God said, “Let there be light” (Gen. 1:3). Light is His creation so that darkness will not reign anywhere.

Darkness itself cannot extinguish light, but we can ignore the light sent from God: His Word, His Son Jesus (the Light of the World), and the person who shares light with us. When we are not guided by light, we wander into the darkness and are apt to lose our way. That is true in the natural world and in the spiritual world.

THE DARKNESS AND THE LIGHT
You called them forth that wondrous day
When You created Earth,
The velvet dark and light’s bright ray,
And gave them equal worth;
Yet man in darkness lost his way,
By light receives new birth.

Oh Lord, when You come to the night,
The darkness does not flee.
It is transformed by Your sweet light,
And I begin to see
They are the same to Your pure sight.
Your presence is the key.

Prayer: Dear God, please help me to follow Your Light, the Lord Jesus Christ.
