December 19th

Read: Genesis 3:14-15; Matthew 2:1-12

Jesus was born of a woman in Bethlehem of Judea. He was born to die on Calvary in Jerusalem some 30 years later. It had been planned by God throughout the ages. The gifts offered by the magi to the young child Jesus were representative of His life. Gold was the traditional gift for royalty. Jesus is King of Kings. Frankincense and myrrh were burial spices, costly ones, and represented Jesus’ early death as Redeemer of our sins. Yes, even a joyous day like Christmas was overshadowed by the cross.

CHRISTMAS SHADOW
When Eve first sinned in Paradise,
‘Twas promised that her seed
Would bruise the serpent’s evil head,
Would overcome indeed.

When we in joy on Christmas Day
Salute the Savior’s birth,
Let us recall just why He came,
Why we now know our worth.

God’s promise, made so long ago,
Was realized that day
In Christ, the Hope of Israel,
Who overcame sin’s sway.

The magi knew, and bearing gifts
With portent of His loss,
They worshipped, kings upon their knees,
O’ershadowed by the cross.

Prayer: Lord, help me to celebrate both Your birth and Your death as I recall who You are.
