Since my husband John and I left houses and family behind to serve the Lord, we have ‘put down short tent pegs’ wherever He has sent us. We do not get too settled in our circumstances so that we may be readily available to Him when He points us in a new direction for service. Gradually He has pared down the ‘stuff’ with which we had burdened our lives. We came home from London with fourteen cartons of household goods and six suitcases of clothing,my guitar, and a portable typewriter. Since then we have been living in a 32- foot fifth- wheel RV. All our possessions are in it. We are free to hook up to our truck and go at any moment, mobile for the Lord.
Not everyone is called to such a nomadic life, but, as believers, we must keep ever in our thinking that “This World is Not My Home”, as the old hymn says. We have a real home in a “city whose builder and maker is God. (Hebrews 11:10)
TRAVELING HOME
Each day I become more aware
That my sojourn here on Earth
Is but a journey home to God,
A pilgrim path my feet have trod,
An interim of worldly care,
From the moment of new birth
‘Til He calls me home.
I feel a strangeness all around;
I sense I’m out of time,
That as I seek His grace each day,
That as He helps me on my way,
That as I e’er find firmer ground
And hear the hours chime,
I’m traveling home.
Somehow He needs me where I am;
My sojourn here has worth.
And though I’d rather be with Him
Beyond this transient interim,
I must be faithful to the Lamb
And tell o’er all the earth
That I’m going home.
Prayer: Dear Lord, thank You for my home in Heaven. Help me to remember that life here is for Your purposes and that it is only a brief sojourn. Help me not to burden myself with ‘stuff”.
