One of the basic rules of teaching is that one must use a language which is understandable by all of the pupils. Jesus was the Great Teacher. He always used illustrations which were sensible to the hearers. ” The Prodigal Son” and “The Good Samaritan” are good examples of that. The hearers could put themselves into the story and see how they might react differently than the characters did. Then the lesson was learned. Sometimes when we try to teach, we forget this basic rule and bring confusion to the hearers.
SIMPLE THINGS
Have you discerned that in God’s Word
The writers speak of simple things
Like seed and harvest, sparrow bird,
Shadow, vine, and eagle’s wings?
Sometimes ’tis grapes or apple red,
Or rock and desert, dry and sere,
Or waters still where we are led,
Or lamps and oil, or sheep, or deer.
God understands our finite minds
Can only grasp what we can see.
He knows fear of the unknown blinds,
And deals with us accordingly.
He uses the simple things we know
In language laced with love and care
To teach us all how we must go
In truth and mercy everywhere.
Prayer: Dear Lord, help me to keep it simple.
