Grandchildren are the delights of any parent’s life. Mine are no exception. The eldest, Jamie is now eighteen years old and in her first year of college. The youngest, Cody, is in pre-school. Soon he will begin Kindergarten. All of them are very precious to me. When I consider their gifts and their appearances, I see so many of my traits, my husband’s, their aunts’ or uncles;, and their great-grandparents’.
We have prayed much for our grandchildren throughout their lives. Broken bones and other injuries have been healed, often through prayer. Heartaches and illnesses have been passed by with God’s love and healing at work. He has answered even this grandmother’s prayer mentioned at the end of the following poem. He is faithful.
ON THE BIRTH OF JAMIE LYNN
With my grandchild in my arms,
Warm and sweet with baby charms,
I return her solemn gaze
And feel fresh awe and deep amaze
That this new life will carry on
In this old world when I am gone.
Creation’s continuity
Lies here in her humanity.
Flesh and bone and hopes and fears,
Channelled down throughout the years
Through fun and struggles, love and strife,
Have found renewal in her life.
In the days I’ve left to me,
Please, God, allow me time to see
Growth and beauty, love and grace
Captured in her warm embrace,
Substance of Your blessings here,
Touched and treasured and held dear.
Prayer: Dear Father, please help each of our grandchildren to find You, if they have not already. and to follow You closely all of their lives.
