Read: Psalm 125:1-5; Psalm 36:6; Psalms 46:1-11; 121:1-8
The psalmists have often used the stability and greatness of mountains to help us to understand God. His majesty and power are greater than theirs. David discovered that they are a refuge during times of trouble, just as God is our refuge and help, a rock that is our strong tower. God’s Word tells us that the mountains will still stand in the ‘day of the Lord’, when folks will cry for the hills to hide them. (Isa. 2:10-22) Is God your mountain of refuge as He was David’s?
STILL THEY STAND
Great rocks, and hills, and the mountains stand fast,
Carved through the ages, through ages to last.
Deep in their hearts earth’s dark secrets dwell.
Forth from their roots life’s pure waters well.
Down from their heights the great waters sweep.
Up from their haunches the green forests creep.
The sea’s restless surging may alter the shore,
And spring’s freshet flood-tides may change valley’s floor;
The wind’s changing patterns will shift desert sand,
But the mountains in grandeur eternally stand.
Man’s yearnings for progress, Time’s passion for change
Scratch only the surface of a vast mountain range.
Prayer: Father, we appreciateYour mountains and all they mean in this world as part of Your plan in the affairs of men. Help us to see Your eternity, Your power, and Your refuge as we consider them.
