January 2nd

Read: John 12:26; Matthew 5:13-16; Mark 10:32; Luke 22:54

Although Jesus spoke of His Father honoring those who serve Christ, it seems that the purer motive of loving and honoring Him through our service would be even more pleasing to Him. Some follow afar off; some follow in fear; and some follow close to Him, knowing His presence in fair day or foul, on twisting path or paved highway. Confidence in service results from testing His promises in faith, from recognizing His hand in every circumstance, and from seeking His face in daily communication with Him. “Lo, I am with you always,” is the watchword of faithful, fearless service.

FOLLOWING

Often I’m drawn from the highroad,
Away from the wide-flung gates,
Over a stile to a by-way
Where Service stands and waits.
The lane may be dark and narrow;
It may even twist and bend,
But there where Service beckons
Stands my Master and my Friend.
I step ahead undaunted;
This pathway He has trod.
I know the way He’s leading
Will bring glory to my God.

Prayer:: Dear Lord, help me to practice Your presence throughout this day so that my service may be undaunted by any circumstance.
