August 31st

Read: Isaiah 43:1-7; Psalm 22:23-31; Romans 15:1-13

It is so sad that man has lost the understanding of his purpose on this earth. Somehow we get it into our thinking that our purpose is to work hard, raise a nice family, perhaps attend and support a place of worship, and be good citizens of our country. These things are all very important and show healthy attitudes, but unless our thinking centers upon the pure question, “How do I glorify God here,” in each of these areas, we will fail to fulfill that purpose. We will center all of it in, “What will bring glory to me or mine?” … to the flesh and we will find ourselves far from God’s purpose for us.

THE QUEST
Man reaches age of reason
And asks within his heart
Why there’s so short a season
For him to play his part.

The span of years for learning
Is a brief and stormy time,
While in man’s mind is burning
The quest for reason and rhyme!

But when man meets the Savior
And looks on His dear face,
His mind comes then to savor
The blessings of God’s grace.

Time can no longer threaten!
Man no more questions, “Why?”
His purpose here is certain…
God he must glorify.

And then man’s quest is ended,
For Spirit then will lead
To talents God intended,
And man will see his need.

Prayer: Dear God, thank You for revealing my purpose in Your Word. Help me always to put it first in my plans, my family, my work, and my church.
