August 7th
Read: Proverbs 3:21-24; Psalm 4: Job 11:14-19; Psalm 91
In our travels to and from England and across this United States, John and I have slept in many strange places, especially in our R.V., but we have always slept well. “The sleep of the just,” my mother used to call it. We’ve slept in mall parking lots, in rest stops in various states, in out-of-the-way campgrounds, and even along the highway. We have always slept safely. In one campground near Lancaster, Pa., trees were blown down in gale winds all around us. We took some precautions, then we slept well. In London we had a ground-floor flat in a high-crime area. We always slept without fear and restfully. God was with us. We belong to Him and are on His business. Why should we fear?
NIGHT FLIGHT
As night creeps in and settles down,
Spreading her mantle o’er the day,
Clothed in velvet with a crown
Of stars to light the pilgrim’s way,
I ponder over thoughts as deep
As ever is the ebony night,
Searching self before sweet sleep
Drifts in to sweep me up in flight.
I wonder, as I watch and wait
For that soft sojourn there in Nod,
If I’ve helped to illuminate
Another’s journey toward God,
If daylight acts were wisely drawn
From His great measure of light in me,
That e’er I rise and face new dawn
My flight will safe and restful be.
Prayer: Dear God, thank You that night holds no terrors for me, because You are there.
