Anja, our German exchange student, came home from her first day in our small- town school full of excitement about a picnic the senior class was planning for the following Saturday. It was being planned in retaliation, because the whole senior class had been denied their traditional picnic as punishment for so many showing up that day drunk and disorderly!

I was very uncomfortable about her going for several reasons. The chosen site was miles from town in a secluded area. There would be no adult supervision. Anja was new to the town, and although she was eighteen, she had not had opportunity to assess the class population to make wise choices of friends. I told her that it would not be a good idea to attend.

She was very upset with me. She saw the picnic as an opportunity to meet all the kids and have a party. She was a party kind of girl. I chose to leave the discussion until she cooled down, and I went to ask God’s help. I told Him how helpless I felt in the situation and pleaded for wisdom. While I was praying, the phone rang. It was a friend inviting Anja to go horseback riding on Saturday! When I told her about it, all picnic plans were soon forgotten. It seems that Anja had sold her own horse to get the money to come to the U.S.!!! God had been busy answering my prayer before I ever asked!

BEFORE I CALL
God knows my heart
And sees my need Before I even call!
His blessings start
And needs exceed
Before my words can fall!
And all His good
Is working out
As I begin my prayer!
If I’ve withstood
The thrusts of doubt,
Behold, the answer’s there!

Prayer: Father, I thank You for the many times You have answered my prayers of helplessness. Help me to remember every time to ask and to receive.
