October 25th

Read: Genesis 8:22; Ecclesiastes 2:11; Ephesians 2:1-10

Autumn in the hills of New York State is usually spectacular. The reds of sumac, woodbine, and maples vie for attention against the bright blue October skies. The harvest of apples, cabbages, pumpkins, and grapes blends colors and aromas which permeate the air and leave me wondering what the next assault on my senses will be. Geese and ducks on their southing flybys cry their weather alerts. The whole season bubbles within me, fills me, prods me awake after warm and sleepy summer days.

I feel much the same after a season of prayer … energized, alert, senses straining to take it all in, not to miss anything of the beauty and provision of God. I remember, at such times, that He has quickened me through Jesus Christ so that I may sense Him with all my senses alert.

When autumn rains come, and they will come, I can draw from God’s reserve of life in me to go through dull and dreary days in alert recognition that God is all and in all.

AUTUMN ( From Four Who Come)
When Autumn strides down from the hills,
He leads a gay parade
Of southing geese and gusty chills,
In checkered garb arrayed.
His frosty fingers touch the trees
To turn their green leaves gold,
And when the maples sense his freeze,
They flaunt their scarlets bold.
His bright excesses fill the land
And overwhelm the sky
Until its bright blue heights demand
Release so it might cry.
Its weeping saddens all the world,
And Autumn slinks away,
Leaving dead brown leaves all curled
To crumble and decay.

Prayer: Dear Father, thank You for Your life within me which carries me through any season of my life victoriously. Please keep me alert and energized in autumn brightness or the cold winds of winter.
