Read: Psalm 77 and 1 Corinthians 3:11-13
I enjoyed playing my cello in our high-school orchestra. The deep bass tones of the cellos, basses, trombones and sometimes the timpani spoke to me. They seemed to set the pace of the music, the core of all the variations of theme and tempo which the composer had written. They were the foundation on which all the other instruments based their reason for being, or so it seemed to me. There were times when the higher-pitched instruments played without the bass tones, but it seemed then rather like a group of children had wandered from the protection of their family and were going their own way.
The Christian life is rather like that too. When we remain in right relationship to God with Christ as our sure foundation, no matter what pattern of events may be evidenced on the surface, life continues to move in the direction in which the Great Composer Himself leads.
BASS CLEF
The full true chords which underscore
The melody of life,
The deep bass sounds which trace the floor
For dancing tune of fife,
These are the measured tones of love,
The profound accents of prayer,
The vibrant pulsing from above
That tells us God is there.
As the song each heart must play,
The concerto of the soul,
Is orchestrated, ’twill o’erlay
Those bass chords as they roll.
Though bright may be the melody
Or sad may be life’s strain,
Those rhythmic chords yet hold the key
And deep joy do contain.
Prayer: Dear Lord, help me to listen always to Your measured beat in my life even as melodies soar around me to draw my attention from Your foundation.
