Uncle Howard sat on his fully screened porch in the Adirondack foothills. He heard a thump against the screen and a curious buzzing sound. He looked around to see a female
hummingbird trying to extricate her beak from the screen! She was stuck fast. Being a compassionate man, he went out to help her.
Gently he stopped her frantic struggles in his rather large hand. Carefully he released her beak and held her until she quieted. He walked toward the garden of hollyhocks and larkspur against the woodshed and released her. She immediately flew to his shoulder and perched there, not fully recovered from her impact or her fright. Finally she flew off into the garden.
During the summer weeks which followed, he noticed that she did not hesitate to fly and feed close to him as he weeded in the flower beds. In delight he reported her visits to my aunt, and they both enjoyed her presence all summer.
The next spring she was back and seemed as friendly as ever. One day, as he and Aunt Marjory watched in awe, she brought her young with her and perched on Uncle Howard’s shoulder again! She had come to introduce her little ones to the one who had saved her life!
Do we, as parents and grandparents, introduce our little ones to the Savior of our souls? Do we teach them diligently to trust Him throughout life by word and example? Are we as wise as Mrs. Hummingbird?
THE LITTLE ONES
Comfort the little ones;
Show them God’s care;
Guide them and tell them
That help comes through prayer.
Teach all the little ones
Passing your way
By the example
You live every day.
Gather the little ones
Close to your heart
That they may know Jesus
Right from the start.
Sing to the little ones;
Praise Him with song,
With music to last them
All their lives long.
Prayer: Dear Lord, all little ones are precious to You. Help me to put little feet on Your path for them.
