October 12th

October 12th

Read: Exodus 3:3-12 and Numbers 12:1-16

One morning my husband and I watched a large flock of Canada geese arrive at the pond near our campsite. We heard them first with their noisy gabbling, an unmistakable sound once one has experienced it. They were black silhouettes against the bright blue October sky as they circled low to scout the area. It seemed as if each one had an opinion on the lead goose’s choice of a landing site.

As the leader began the approach to his splash landing, a part of the flock increased their complaints and whirled up as if to go another way. In the end, however, they came back and settled onto the surface of the pond, acquiescing to the leader and ceasing their noisy conversation.

It reminded me of some church meetings which I have attended. Everyone wants his opinion heard. Some threaten to leave (and sometimes do), but in the end the leaders are respected, and unity of purpose is often gained. The safety of the flock is always the prime concern, whether it be geese or church members, and God has raised up His leader for that purpose in both cases. May we followers recognize God at work in and through His leaders as we follow them through a difficult and treacherous world.

PREPARATION
Who knows how those small events
Which come to burden us today,
And how we meet their challenge now,
Will help prepare the very way
For us to be the hands and minds
Which God can trust to use some day?

With this in view, accept each test
With faith in God’s own Word
That He will give us courage now
And always undergird.
Then trials will mold and shape us
Into servants of the Lord.

Prayer: Dear Lord, whether I lead or assist leadership or submit to leadership, help me to understand that it is all of Your sovereignty and for Your purpose and glory.
