It requires courage to go against tradition. It also requires courage to go against the ‘reason’ of man, but often tradition and reason limit our thinking. Imaginative solutions to problems are often pushed aside because of this lack of courage. Businesses, churches, even homes suffer because, “We never did it that way.”

Jesus Christ and His disciples were known for going against the Jewish traditions. The miracles performed by them defied all reason of man. If we follow Jesus truly, we must have courage to go against any tradition which deters the preaching of the gospel and any ‘reason’ which denies the truth of who Christ is and what He has done. Let us be courageous.

SPIRIT OVER MIND
God’s truth must come to break the chains
Of custom ’round the heart
Before the purest heights one gains
Where tradition has no part.

When God told Joshua to march
His people ’round the wall,
Reason said, “Impossible!”,
But Jericho did fall.

When Gideon’s tiny soldier band
Encompassed Midian’s height
With pitcher-covered lamps in hand,
God’s ‘foolishness’ showed His might.

Yes, reason and tradition
Limit the minds of man,
But God’s truth cannot be so contained
When the Spirit says, “I can!”

Prayer: Dear God, give me discernment to recognize tradition and reason which hinder the gospel and deny Jesus Christ as Your Son. Then give me the courage to stand against it.
