December 9th

Read: Genesis 2:7-10 and Genesis 3:8; John 19:41

God’s sense of beauty led Him to plant a garden called Eden and to put His new creation, man, in it. It was a place for Adam to work and a place, evidently, where he and Eve met God as He walked there for communion with His creatures. In Jesus’ life there were two gardens: Gethsemane, where He met with His Father before His arrest, and the one where He was buried and resurrected and where He met Mary on Easter morning. Yes, God enjoys a well-watered garden just as we do.

WEE WORLD
Here in the garden
Down on my knee,
Weeding and mulching,
A small world I see.
Ants hurry, scurry,
Run to and fro,
Seeking and finding
Food as they go.

There on the nectar
In blossom’s bright cup
Butterflies hover
And bees stop to sup.
That web-spun tunnel
Is spider’s abode,
And there ‘neath the squash leaf
Resides Mr. Toad.

High in the larkspur
Hummingbirds pause
While a cicada
His harsh fiddle saws.
Near the petunias,
Pack on his back,
Snail marches slowly,
Leaving his track.

Ladybug’s color
Adds to the scene
Bright gem of scarlet
Set in the green.
I love my garden,
World in a world,
Cloister for wee life
To my view unfurled.

Prayer: Dear God, thank You for gardens and for those who tend them. Thank You for what I have learned of You in my garden.
