When I look back over my life and consider all the folks who have helped me, I can see that God has been working on my behalf always. Some incidents stand clearly in my mind after many years…
Miss Emma Devendorf, my junior choir director at First M.E. Church, was concerned about my choice of studies after High School. She pushed me gently away from music towards teaching. How wise she was to see in me something I didn’t see in myself. Her advice stretched me. I enjoy and use both of those gifts today…
A work-mate during my last summer before graduation invited me for a weekend in her town some miles away. I was to play my cello in her church. The pastor’s wife, whom I had never met, was very kind and thought to take time to encourage me always to use my music for the Lord. I have tried to do that in a small way. She was one of God’s helpers.
A small challenge for you may be in order here. Make a list of people who have been helpers in your life. It will help you to appreciate our loving God and some of His helpers even more.
HELPERS
God prepares people
And sends them our way
At just the right moment
To help pave the way
Over the rough spots
We tread everyday.
If we are receptive
And let Jesus guide,
Desiring to serve Him,
Not turning aside
When new options open,
Untested, untried,
The very assistance
That now meets our need,
The people who touch us
And teach us, indeed
Prepare us as helpers
As we follow His lead.
Prayer: Dear God, thank You for Your helpers in my life. Teach me to be a helper for You.
