Read: Deut. 6:4-9 and 1 Samuel 1:19-28
In the Jewish Seder Service (Passover), mothers are recognized as the spirits of light in the homes. God has given special nurturing gifts to women to enable them as ‘keepers of the light’. Hannah, Samuel’s mother, had only a very few years to share her ‘light’, which was considerable (see 1 Sam 2) with her son. As mothers today we have very few years to share the love of Jesus with our children before they are whisked away by the schools of the world into darker atmospheres than they have known at home. Then they are taught many ungodly things. If we do as God charged Israel in the Deuteronomy passage above, perhaps our children will be prepared to face wickedness without falling, just as Samuel did when he was left in the charge of Eli and his wicked sons in a place where “the word of the Lord was rare.” (1 Sam. 3:1)
KEEPERS OF THE LIGHT
The ‘keepers of the light’
Who nurture well the flame in childish hearts;
The ‘turners to the right’
Who guide each child as on his life he starts;
The ‘keepers of the light’
Who by their spirits bless the hearth and home;
The ‘healers of the blight’
Who chastise and correct as wrongs may come;
The ones who polish bright,
Encouraging the timid soul to dare;
The ‘keepers of the light’
Who cherish and protect and ever care.
Prayer: Dear Lord, give me more light, more of Jesus daily that I might share it with my family to prepare them to meet this world and take Your light into it.
