In the 1930’s there was a flood in Binghamton, New York, where my aunt and uncle lived. Our family visited them shortly afterwards, and we took a ride to survey the damage … trees uprooted, houses twisted from their foundations, and roadways washed away. Aunt Lila had some friends who lived on an island in the Chenango River, which was still rampaging just below flood stage. We parked the car on the river bank and found the foot-bridge which would get us across to the island. It was a rope bridge with a floor of boards and suspended from trees on both sides of the torrent! None of us felt exactly secure as we crossed it.
We have a bridge which spans the gulf between death and life … the cross of Calvary. Our bridge may seem risky to those who do not know its sure Foundation, the Lord Jesus Christ, but it remains secure throughout the ages.
BRIDGES
To build a bridge o’er deep abyss…
Our Master lived and died for this.
His cross from death to life doth span,
A trestle built upon God’s plan,
And He is the great building stone
That will not e’er be overthrown,
The true foundation, thrusting deep
Into the rock where rust can’t creep.
We must build our bridges so,
Upon the only Rock we know,
Patiently, with love, must lay
Stone on stone and pave the way.
We must build from heart to heart,
Communication’s current start,
Until the cross is in its place,
Spanning the gulf in inner space.
Prayer: Dear Lord, I thank You for the cross of Calvary and its sufficiency to carry me to Heaven. Help me to tell others about Your work of salvation on that cross.
